Apex and Ducks Unlimited Launch Landmark Conservation Partnership
Collaboration Has the Potential to Direct Over $6 Million to Critical Wildlife Habitats Through 2029
Charlottesville, VA – April 21, 2025 – Apex Clean Energy today announced a five-year partnership with Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU), that could provide more than $6 million—and as much as $18 million in matching contributions—to fund conservation efforts in regions where Apex’s development portfolio overlaps with DU’s highest-priority landscapes.
The agreement, which extends through 2029, builds on the two organizations’ previous relationship, established through the Apex Conservation Grant (ACG) Program—an industry-first initiative through which Apex voluntarily contributes up to $1,000 per megawatt to nearby environmental projects for each commercialized energy facility. DU will have the first opportunity to access ACG dollars from up to 26 wind and solar projects across approximately a dozen states, creating a streamlined pathway to support habitat restoration and species conservation efforts near future energy facilities.
“By leveraging our organizations’ areas of expertise, we’ve developed an approach to delivering the maximum conservation impact for the regions where we both work,” said Ryan Henning, senior vice president of environmental permitting at Apex. “This agreement shows that by aligning conservation priorities with development goals, our projects can support the resilience of our nation’s energy grid and the environment.”
Over the past three years, the ACG Program has contributed nearly $1.2 million across seven projects to DU’s efforts, which the organization has leveraged into an additional $8.8 million in matching funds. Past collaborations have supported the restoration of wetlands, floodplains, and native grasslands across more than 2,700 acres in key ecological areas—from North Dakota’s Prairie Pothole Region to the Texas panhandle.
“By aligning Apex’s commitment to clean, renewable energy with DU’s mission of protecting and restoring critical habitat, we’re creating long-term solutions for both wildlife and working landscapes,” said DU CEO Adam Putnam. “Together, we’re advancing habitat restoration in some of the most ecologically important areas of the country—ensuring these vital landscapes continue to thrive for generations to come.”
Beyond its habitat conservation investments, Apex has also funded research led by DU and its partners in areas targeted for wind energy development. The insights gained from these studies are guiding both industry and conservation organizations in responsibly locating future projects while reducing potential impacts on migratory birds, bats, and other vulnerable species.
